The Oyo State Police Command has declared one Mr. Alayande Basith Ayomide, a resident of Ibadan, Oyo State, wanted over allegations of homosexuality.
According to a police signal exclusively obtained by this publication and signed by Shitu Abimbola, a Chief Superintendent of Police, the suspect was invited for investigation but ignored the invitation and evaded subsequent arrest efforts by the police.
The State Police Command explained that all efforts to trace the suspect had proved abortive, which necessitated the decision to formally declare him wanted.
“The suspect was declared wanted on March 4, 2024 after failing to honour several invitations for investigation.”
The police have called on members of the public with useful information about the suspect to approach the State Police Command or the nearest police station.
The law in Nigeria
Homosexuality is a criminal offence under Nigerian law and attracts a minimum of 14 years imprisonment upon conviction.
Same-sex sexual activity is prohibited under the Criminal Code Act and the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act 2013 (SSMPA), which criminalise acts of “carnal knowledge against the order of nature,” “gross indecency,” and same-sex unions.
In addition to the Criminal Code Act and the 2013 legislation, the offence attracts the death penalty by stoning in northern Nigerian states where Sharia law is practised.
